Investor relations during and after a raise
Investor relations in fundraising means owning the relationship with every prospect and LP: what they receive, what they ask and what they read. One room for prospects and one for existing LPs, with groups per investor and a shared answer bank, lets a small IR team serve many investors consistently.

How this raise works
At many emerging managers, IR is one person, sometimes the CFO. At larger firms it is a team covering prospecting, the raise, onboarding and reporting. Either way, the job is the same: give every investor the same facts at the same time, answer quickly and keep a record.
During the raise, IR tracks which prospects opened the deck, DDQ and PPM, schedules follow-ups and gathers questions for the deal team. After the close, IR handles capital calls, quarterly reports, LPAC logistics, side letter obligations and ad hoc requests from LPs, consultants and auditors.
The handover between the two phases is where things slip. Questions answered during the raise come back after the close, and LPs notice inconsistent answers. An answer bank that carries over, and a room structure that persists into reporting, make the next raise much easier.

Setting up the room
- 01
Split prospects from LPs
Keep a prospect room and an LP room so committed investors never see marketing drafts and prospects never see capital statements.
- 02
Build the answer bank
Save every approved answer by topic and reuse it, updating the source when facts change.
- 03
Connect your CRM
Sync investor status and room activity with your CRM so the pipeline reflects what investors actually read.
- 04
Track obligations
List side letter and LPA duties with dates and owners after each close.
- 05
Review engagement monthly
Check which LPs read reports and which never log in, and reach out before the next raise.
Common mistakes
- One room for prospects and LPs, with marketing drafts visible to investors already in.
- Answers to the same question that differ between investors.
- Losing raise-period answers when IR staff change.

Questions and answers
What does investor relations do in a fund raise?
Manages communication with prospects and LPs: materials, meetings, questions, DDQs, closings and, after the raise, reporting and LP requests.
Should IR use a CRM or a data room?
Both. The CRM tracks relationships; the data room holds documents and shows what investors read. Linking them gives the full picture.
How early should IR prepare for the next fund?
From the first close of the current one. Reporting quality and responsiveness are what LPs judge at the next raise.
