How it is calculated

  1. Base weeks by raise type: company round 4 prep and 6 diligence; fund raise 8 and 10; real estate 3 and 4; debt 4 and 6 (our planning figures).
  2. Preparation = base prep x (1 + share of documents not ready).
  3. Outreach = investors to meet / meetings a week.
  4. Total = preparation + outreach + diligence.

Worked example: A fund raise with 60% of documents ready

Preparation (8 x 1.4)11.2 weeks
Outreach (80 / 8)10 weeks
Diligence to first close10 weeks
Total31.2 weeks, about 7.2 months

Readiness is the lever you control

Market conditions set how fast investors decide. How ready the room is when the first meeting happens is up to you. Every document still in draft adds a round of follow-ups later.

Fund raises run longer

A first close for a new fund commonly takes many months, and the final close can be a year or more after the first. Plan the firm budget for that.

Overlap the stages

Outreach and diligence overlap in real raises: the first investors are in the room while others are still being met. This planner adds the stages up, so treat the result as a cautious figure.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Starting outreach before the room is ready.
  • Booking meetings faster than the team can follow up.
  • Not planning a first close date.
  • Forgetting holiday periods when LPs are slow.
